PhD position on biorefning of hemp

PhD position on biorefning of hemp

Holistic evaluation and interconnected value generation of hemp utilisation in material, chemical and pharmaceutical

The Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology, Department of Technical Physics are now inviting applications for Doctoral Researcher (PhD Student) in Holistic evaluation and interconnected value generation of hemp utilisation in material, chemical and pharmaceutical sectors) in the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Doctoral Training Network DESTINY. The position is expected to begin on 1 September 2024, or 1 December 2024 at the latest.

Research is based on earlier studies and development efforts together with industrial partners related to comprehensive utilization of hemp in different sustainable products. For example, speciality chemicals extracted from hemp and hemp processing residues, such as distillates, essential oils, powders and biochar/hydrochar, can be utilized as a functional ingredient in surface treatments, coatings, composites, or seedbeds. Specific molecules or molecular mixtures enhance the antimicrobial properties of materials or food perspectives (e.g., edible oil, flour, flavouring, preservatives).

The Doctoral Researcher will conduct research at the University of Eastern Finland (Kuopio campus, Finland) and will have the opportunity to make a research visit to the University of Bologna, UNIBO (Bologna, Italy) as part of the research project to improve our understanding on the European hemp valorization potential.
