Wood is being used more and more in construction, a good thing for greener building. But this also raises a question: how do we avoid overusing a handful of species?

Right now, the timber industry relies on just a few types of wood and, in a changing climate, diversifying the species we use would help:
-make the supply chain more resilient,
-reduce pressure on specific forest areas,
-support local economies and skills.

This PhD (one of several similar initiatives elsewhere) aims to assess the suitability of local Mediterranean French woods for construction, specifically for mass timber products like glulam and CLT. The goal is to find mono‑species or hybrid combinations that meet European standards. The approach is parametric, varying production parameters (species mix, pressure, adhesive, surface preparation) to see how they affect performance.
